2008 Bad Ass Recap

Thanks to all who came out and ran one of the many distance options offered. A good showing of almost 40 folks came out to the high desert to get a great run in. The 50k has a new course record set by Justin's Angle's Bad Ass dog Piper in a smokin' time of 4:36:40, edging out her master and Rod Bien by only 10 seconds...nice work, Piper!

We were blessed with nice weather again this year. A snow storm blew through Friday night and dumped 8 inches of new snow in Bend. However, on the drive out, Bend's east side of town only had about 2 inches of snow and by 3 miles east of town...dry as a bone. Typical Central Oregon storm...everything east of the Deschutes River almost always gets far less snow.

Horseridge Area, where the event is held is a 1000 feet higher than the valley floor, but there was only an inch or two of snow on the course. We had some windy conditions on the top of the Cinder Butte, and it definitely called for covering up your ears as you went over the top, but most of the course was nice temps, out of the wind. We had sunny skies for part of the day and a few clouds blew in by afternoon.

Even thought this is a "self-supported" fun run, thanks again to Dan and Kathy Harshburger for providing soup, hot chocolate (w/ peppermint schnapps add-on option), coffee, other snacks, and manning the aid station for the participants with a propane heater for warming up. Central Oregon Running Club provided water and tables, Rod Bien at Fleet Feet Bend provided a tent for the aid station and a few goodies for 50k finishers.

Once again, the Colonel did the course marking and Bronco Billy provided complimentary studding of running shoes. Thanks to Krissy Moehl for hosting a post-race soup and drinks party at her place.

Run long,

Jeff Browning & Sean MeissnerRace Directors, The Bad Ass 50k
