I was unexpectedly laid off from work and other than dreaming that now I could train full time, the reality is, I needed to change directions. But I'm looking at this as a great opportunity. So Ultra Crazy is alive and well and should be back up to speed shortly. 2. Time for Chuckanut!Time for the second race in the Washington Ultra Series! Be sure to check out the competition for the series by clicking on 2009 Results. Good luck an see ya there! 3. Sean wins Run to the Sun!Sean Meissner wore race bib 100 to represent his 100th ultra, and won the Run to the Sun, the 36.2 mile ultramarathon, starting in Kahului,Maui at sea level and finishing at the summit of Haleakala crater at 10,023 ft. During the race, wind speeds hit 50+ mph on Haleakala in the early afternoon, temperatures could have been in the 30s - which translates into the low to mid teens when you factor in wind speed. Conditions were so bad, the finish was moved 3 miles down from the top. Way to tough it out Sean!4. Crazy Tips - Running in Maui!
Should you have the opportunity to visit Maui, here's some running spots for you. Nothing beats an early morning run along the beach trail that streches from Lahaina to Kaanapauli. My all time favorite is at the Kapalua Resort area, just down the road from Lahaina. First check in at the club house to get a free guest pass and a trail map. Then, enjoy the asphalt golf cart paths that lead you up the mountain to an abandoned golf course with golf cart paths that must have been too steep for the golfers! You can run little loops for miles with lots of elevation and of course, incredible views. If you're really in for adventure, head up to the volcano Haleakala. Check the mile markers along the road up and start about 5 miles below the summit about an hour or more before the sunrise. It's not a bad run and the views are fantastic and if you catch the sunrise at the top, WoW!
